In 20000 leagues under the sea, the narrator describes narwhal horns pulled from the hulls of ships. Google failed me on this one. Is there any record of a narwhal attacking a ship?

Other whales attacking ship story references also welcome -

I don’t know if any records of Narwals attacking (written at least) and the only two actual whale attacks written (that I know about and had been collaborated) were by sperm whales, and even then they where more of accidental attacks or being caught in the wrong. One was a sperm that had been harpooned and it’s tail caught the ship while it was thrashing around, and the other had something to do with a collision between the ship and a whale.

Keep in mind these where full size vessels. Thousands of little wooden boats (whaleboats, dinghys, skiffs etc) where lost mostly due to their size and extreme proximity to the whale being attacked.

Also, sailors (esp in the golden age of sail) where a very superstitious bunch and relied on word of mouth stories heavily. Tons of sailors knew about a specific ship that had “been destroyed by sea monsters or whales” as told to them by a “survivor” or other person, so it stands to reason there where attacks, but they where dismissed due to “sailors being superstitious and being prone to tall tails” as it would most likely been reported as a “monster attack” vs a whale attack.
