I would strongly recommend obtaining The Cambridge History of Inner Asia: The Chinggisid Age, which is an overview of the history of the Mongol Empire and its successors with articles written by many of the foremost historians of Inner Asia. In addition to the sources already listed on the AskHistorians book list, my other recommendations are Morris Rossabi's The Mongols and Global History, Thomas Allsen's "The Rise of the Mongolian Empire and Mongolian Rule in North China" chapter in the The Cambridge History of China vol. 6, and Joseph Fletcher's "The Mongols: Ecological and Social Perspectives" in Harvard Journal of Asiatic Studies 46/1 (June 1986):11-50.
