What official military records can be requested for Historical research purposes?

by KindaSortaSuccinct

Both of my Grandfathers served in WWII in the United States Marine Corps and Navy respectively. Since they have both now passed on, it is not as easy to learn about their experience in the war (they didn't like talking about it much while they were living anyways).

I was hoping to gain access to their official military records...or at least the ones that my father and mother would be allowed to access as direct family members. I figured this Sub would have some of the best insight and experience in doing this sort of thing and could help get me started in the right direction.

Any suggestions or advice on how to obtain official military information/documents related to my Grandfathers' military service during WWII would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance! Happy New Year!!!

Depends on when they separated and what not. You can submit records requests with the National Archives and with the Office of Personnel Management. Since they are deceased, with proof of death and approval from the spouse or closes living relative you should be able to get the information. I've linked both sites documents request pages for you.

Hello there! As your question is related to looking for identification/information regarding military personnel, our Guide on Military Identification may be of use to you. It provides a number of different resources, including how to request service records from a number of national agencies around the world, as well as graphical aids to assist in deciphering rank, unit, and other forms of badges or insignia. While the users here may still be able to lend you more assistance, hopefully this will provide a good place to start!
