What was going on in Israel in the 10th century BC?

In Sunday school, I was taught that David and Solomon ruled over a large and wealthy state. How much support is there for this view?

Follow-up question -- what I know of early Israeli and Judahite history comes via Israel Finkelstein, in The Bible Unearthed, David and Solomon with Silberman, and then The Lost Kingdom, and The Quest for the Historical Israel with Mazar. As a result I know I've got a distinct bias towards his high chronology and a diminished view of the early Judahite state in favour of Israel, but I've heard that his chronology and his interpretations have been shifting slightly in more recent years. Could anyone briefly fill us in on updates in the area, and perhaps good recent sources providing a rounded overview?

Edit: I should probably also comment that as a cosmologist I've fairly well-trained in statistics, and seeing in The Lost Kingdom, the radiocarbon data he was using to justify his chronology was a bit... hair-raising. I genuinely hope that was because the book was adapted from undergraduate lectures and significantly simplified, because thanks to the large standard deviations his data looked to be at a level that even in cosmology we'd hesitate to claim even evidence, let alone clear demonstration.
