Help identifying markings on Colonial socket bayonet? (American Revolutionary War)

by kellikakes

I'm so sorry if this is the wrong place for this! I just need some help on where I might find this information.

I'm very much an amature and working on my geneology. I have reason to believe I have a relative who was in the American Revolutionary War, and my grandmother has an old bayonet, but has little idea where it comes from. I believe this relative was from Pennsylvania, but I'm not 100% certain.

Again, I'm so sorry if this post is in the wrong place.

Looking at this, I’m not sure it’s from the Revolution. Those stamp marks are generally a bit sharper and clearer than I’m used to seeing.

It’s definitely British. See that arrow between the W and D? That’s the broad arrow, stamped or painted onto pretty much anything purchased or issued by the British military from the seventeenth century to the present.

Knowing it’s British led me here. Per that page, R W [arrow] D stands for Royal (presumably) War Department. The War Department wasn’t organized until 1855, so this piece probably does not predate that (unless someone took the time to mark up old stuff). “E” could stand for Enfield. Anything else I’m less confident about interpreting.

If this is a family heirloom from Pennsylvania, it might be from the Civil War.
