MKULTRA Research Paper

by Rattlekraits

Hey, I'm doing a research paper on MKULTRA. Would you know any books or sources I should be reading before my start?

Hi - we as mods have approved this thread, because while this is a homework question, it is asking for clarification or resources, rather than the answer itself, which is fine according to our rules. This policy is further explained in this Rules Roundtable thread and this META Thread.

As a result, we'd also like to remind potential answerers to follow our rules on homework - please make sure that your answers focus appropriately on clarifications and detailing the resources that OP could be using.

Additionally, while users may be able to help you out with specifics relating to your question, we also have plenty of information on /r/AskHistorians on how to find and understand good sources in general. For instance, please check out our six-part series, "Finding and Understanding Sources", which has a wealth of information that may be useful for finding and understanding information for your essay.

There are a few listed in this recent discussion - the one I'm familiar with, Martin A. Lee and Bruce Shlain's Acid Dreams: The CIA, LSD, and the Sixties Rebellion can be read on Erowid here.

That's specific to LSD and other drugs.

MKULTRA also extended into other spheres - there's a huge body of often-questionable work looking at this and related projects and their use of UFO research groups and conspiracy theory in manipulating public opinion. One of my favorites along those lines is Mark Pilkington's Mirage Men: An Adventure into Paranoia, Espionage, Psychological Warfare, and UFOs - which is written for the mass market, but is well-sourced.

The CIA themselves make documents available from FOIA searches in their "Electronic Reading Room". Of course, that is the CIA - anticipate lots of material, lots of reading-between lines. This pdf from a 1977 document might be a starting point - it's telling agency staffers how to respond to MKULTRA questions once the congressional hearings took place.
