In the book The Eagle in Splendour: Inside the Court of Napoleon link there is a reference to Napoleon's plan for a never realised coronation in Rome in 1813. "St Peters would have been the scene of the Emperor's third coronation, even grander than those already performed in Paris or Milan".
There is no mention of what title Napoleon planned to assume. Did he plan to become emperor of a new Roman Empire? Would this merely be a ceremonial triumph or was it his plan to move away from French Nationalism and towards a focus on a more pan-European state?
Why would Napoleon start a new Roman Empire?
