If the Aztecs and Spanish had different conceptions of warfare, how did these differences factor into the conquest of Mexico? Were they responsible for how the conquest turned out?

I've heard that the Aztec's fundamentally viewed warfare differently than the Spanish conquerors because the Aztecs often waged war to secure human sacrifices. Is this true and what role did these differences play during the conquest? Did they significantly undermine the Aztec's chance at resisting or did it only play a minor role?
