The Byzantine Empire considered itself Roman, called itself Roman, was in fact the same polity as the Eastern Roman Empire. What did Western Europe, with its glorification of Rome, think of Byzantium?

Specifically, when did Western Europe stop thinking of Byzantium as "Roman" and instead as "Greek" or "Byzantine" or "not really the same thing as the Roman Empire"?

Only in the 16th century was the term Byzantine first used. So they did think of it as roman. But the rest I dont really know.
