Two destroyers from the Royal Norwegian Navy participated in the D-Day Landings. The two ships, named Svenner and Stord, were part of the British S-class. They had been built in British yards for the Royal Navy in 1943-44, but were transferred to the Free Norwegian Navy. However, they continued to operate under the command of the RN, and to all intents and purposes, were RN units, albeit ones manned by Norwegians. Both destroyers formed part of the 23rd Destroyer Flotilla, along with the other British-manned S-class destroyers. This flotilla was part of Force S, the invasion force for Sword Beach. Stord, along with the British Saumarez and Swift, escorted the monitor HMS Roberts across the Channel, while Svenner escorted a minesweeping flotilla and a number of cruisers. While waiting for a clear channel to be swept, Force S came under attack from a number of German torpedo boats from Le Havre, the only German vessels to sortie on the 6th June. Two torpedoes struck Svenner amidships, breaking her back and causing her to sink quickly. Fortunately, most of her crew were saved. Stord had a much less eventful day, adding her gunfire to the naval bombardment, and supporting the troops ashore. A number of other Norwegian ships participated - the patrol vessel Nordkapp escorted coastal convoys in the invasion area, while Nortraship, the organisation that administered the Free Norwegian Merchant Navy, provided a number of transports and cargo ships.
