I managed to dig up some kind of student newspaper from my grandfather's belongings, and it was called the Soledad Canyonite. The papers mention March and June of 1935, as well as teachers of some sort. I was curious if this was a school camp, a boy scout kind of camp, or some other retreat, but I can't find any info on it.
There are copies of a Soledad Canyonite from Acton, CA preserved on microfiche with the publisher is listed as Civilian Conservation Corps company 1647 (see entries 1 and 2 – apparently there was an interlude as just the Canyonite in between). There are some photos from the company hosted by the Santa Clarita Historical Society here, and a clipping from a Salem, Ohio newspaper that mentions the work being done. If you want to read more issues of the Canyonite, talk to your local librarian about requesting copies through Interlibrary Loan.
