Hi! I was wondering if anyone could help find info on the field postcode 37404. After years of Ancestry research, I've been able to (through the national archive) find out a relative served under the field postcode 37404.
I've been searching for this number for days, but I can't really find any informative information. I don't really understand what the field number means either. Are you as a soldier connected to the same number the whole war, or is it changing depending on your geo. position?
Thank you so much for helping - It means alot to me and my family!
A fieldpostnumber is a postal code for a unit so that mail from home could reach a particular soldier without giving away their position. Fieldpostnumbers were used by German forces throughout Europe, by the Reichsbahn, by the Organisation Todt and a lot of other Nazi-German organization. They were handed out at random and often reassigned should a unit cease to exist.
According to the Deutsche Dienststelle (WASt) the number 37404 had the following designation:
28.2.1941-29.7.1941) Marine-Nachrichtenoffizier Varna (Marine Intelligence Officer Varna) (1.3.1942-7.9.1942) gestrichen (striken from record) (8.9.1942-11.3.1943) Kommandeur d. Infanterie-Divisions-Nachschubtrupp 295. (commander of the Infantry Division Supply Troop 295)
I highly recommend you get in touch with the Deutsche Diensstelle since they are the very organization designated to help people find information about their relatives who served in the Wehrmacht.
