According to my Grandmother, my Great Grandfather was killed on February 19th 1942 near or in Stalino (the modern Donezk). I've already submitted an appeal to the "Deutsche Dienststelle" half a year ago. After reading a little bit myself and read that the Donbass Offensive, which also included an attack on Stalino, started in August of 1943. So I was wondering if German troops were already advanced towards Stalino by February 1942 or if my Grandmother got something wrong there. According to her there was a "Gefallenenmeldung" (KIA report), but I'm not sure about that as she first mentioned they only knew about his death from a soldier returning home who told he was one of his comrades and buried him next to a road in Stalino.
I would really appreciate it if some of you have any more answers for me. I have not seen my Grandmother cry often, but when talking to her about my Great Grandfather she could not hold back even after 65 years had past. So I really want to get more information for her. If needed I can also attach a picture of him.
The German 17th Army, commanded by Hermann Hoth captured the important industrial city of Stalino (Donezk) on 20.10.1941
