After defeat, why wasn't Japan divided into occupied zones, like Germany?

Specifically: Why didn't the Soviet Union get a piece of Japan?

I heard "Douglas MacArthur" might have been responsible for it, but I don't understand, was there some kind of negotiation with the Soviet Union about this? Did the Soviet Union give up so easily? What happened?

As a follow up question: when the Soviet Union did get pieces of Japan, Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands, why were they allowed to keep them as conquests and why weren’t they returned to Japan?
