I have inherited a Map Satchel my Grandfather (Canadian Forces) brought home with him from Germany after World War II. It has two numbers written on the inside flap:
L 46584 (scratched out)
L 62939
Here is the satchel:
And the inside flap with the numbers: https://imgur.com/jypGSKY
Do the numbers identify a person? Or something else?
The Fw is for Feldwebel (equivalent to Sergeant). So Feldwebel Wütherich - now Rolf Wütherich (mechanic for Porsche and in the car with James Dean) was amongst other things a paratrooper (in the Luftwaffe during the war but I can't find any further details on his rank or service history...
Further research on the original owner would likely need to start with the [German Archives] (https://www.dd-wast.de).
'L' followed by 5 digits is the right pattern for a Luftwaffe Feldpostnummer, a postal code for a unit. According to a list at [Axis History] (http://www.axishistory.com/axis-nations/383-germany-military-other/feldpost/8994-feldpost-numbers):
46584
62939
From my rather limited German they appear to be training units of some sort, flak in the first instance and paratroops in the second; you might have more luck with additional information on the above forums.
For those interested, here's an album with more information about my Grandfather, and some of the contents of the satchel I inherited. Now, some of the contents are my Grandfather's and some must have been in the satchel when he acquired it (my what means, I don't know and he's not around anymore to tell me).
