Did the ancient Egyptians help Eratosthenes calculate the circumference of the Earth?

by Schmohnathan

My understanding is that Eratosthenes used the Column at Alexandria and the Well at Syene to measure the circumference of the Earth about 2000 years ago. Both of those were apparently part of Egypt, so, being the math and science fans that they were, did they help? Thank you!

Hi -- could you maybe clarify your question a bit? Eratosthenes was the chief librarian at Alexandria, which at the time was a Greek colony under the rule of Ptolemy III. Although he was born in Cyrene and studied in Athens, he moved to Alexandria when he was about 30 and lived out his life there, so although you can argue that he was not natively Egyptian, he spent ~50 years of his life in Egypt.

Are you curious about native Egyptian collaborators, possibly?
