Information Request: The Russian Crime Underworld from 1900 to 2000 (1998 Works Too) (More Specific in Post)

by Ahunter83

Hello. I'm in the process of researching Russia's criminal underworld from 1900 to 2000 for a paper (worth around 40% of my semester grade). While I have found some sources, I'm severely lacking sources for different periods and could use some help.

Specifically, I request information about these topics in these time frames:

  • 1900 through the End of Communist Russia (Anything within the original timeframe)
  • Held Political Power (Specifically in Communist and Soviet Russia)
  • Criminal Culture (Specifically in Communist and Soviet Russia)
  • 1900-2000 (1900-1998 Works Too) (Anything within the original timeframe)
  • How Russia's Government Has Tried to Stop Crime (Anything within the original timeframe)

Any source is fine; however, digital text (Websites, E-Books, ect.) is preferred. Thank you in advance.

Hi - we as mods have approved this thread, because while this is a homework question, it is asking for clarification or resources, rather than the answer itself, which is fine according to our rules. This policy is further explained in this Rules Roundtable thread and this META Thread.

As a result, we'd also like to remind potential answerers to follow our rules on homework - please make sure that your answers focus appropriately on clarifications and detailing the resources that OP could be using.

Additionally, while users may be able to help you out with specifics relating to your question, we also have plenty of information on /r/AskHistorians on how to find and understand good sources in general. For instance, please check out our six-part series, "Finding and Understanding Sources", which has a wealth of information that may be useful for finding and understanding information for your essay.

So here are... a ton of sources, of varying use. This essentially is my bibliography from my MA dissertation on the evolution of the Russian Mafia, 1980-2000 (except this is a misnomer, there is no Russian Mafia. There's a complex underworld of interlinked Eurasian criminal individuals and organisations. Many of whom are ethnically Russian, but many of whom are not. Some are ethnically Russian but have different, or multiple, citizenships.)

Obviously there's more of a lean towards post-Communist Russia, though many of these sources do discuss pre-Communist Russia. For pre-Communist Russia, the best sources are probably:

Russian Organised Crime: A Brief History” in Russian Organised Crime: The New Threat? (London: Frank Cass, 1997)

Arkady Vaksberg The Soviet Mafia (London: Weidenfeld and Nicholson, 1991)

Stephen Handelman Comrade Criminal (London: Penguin, 1994)

Joseph D. Serio and Vyacheslev Razinkin “Thieves Professing the Code: the Traditional Role of Vory v Zakone in Russia's Criminal World and Adaptations to a New Social Reality”, in Russian and Post-Soviet Organised Crime (2002)

Basically, you want to be looking at three things: the vory v zakone, corruption in the nomenklatura, especially in the Brezhnev era, and the "fixers" who helped factories get around the USSR's bureaucratised supply chains.

You might also want to look at https://inmoscowsshadows.wordpress.com/ , which is the blog of Mark Galeotti, probably the most well-informed western academic expert on the Russian underworld (past and present).

Of course, I'm assuming you don't speak Russian, so these are mostly English-language sources.

Here's a ton of sources, but how much access you'll have to them I don't know:
