Were the ancient Egyptians black or white?

Pointing to previous discussions is not intended to shut off further questions and followons.

You ask "black or white", which might be thought to refer to skin color. But in the US, those terms are racial terms, so I immediately thought of the question in race / culture terms. There was a Monday Methods post:

'Monday Methods: "No but what race were the ancient Egyptians really?" – Race as a concept in history' at https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/5j6b4i/monday_methods_no_but_what_race_were_the_ancient/

started by /u/commiespaceinvader but followed up by many more. I think it's fair to summarize the main post as saying that "race" as it's currently constructed in the US is a product of the 19th Century. There's a bit about ranges of skin color, but "race" wasn't their category. But please don't take that TL;DR as the answer -- the whole discussion is worth it.

There's also discussion by /u/VetMichael and others in 'I'm a "fake Egyptian"? African-Americans are "true Egyptians"?' under https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/4f7wi0/im_a_fake_egyptian_africanamericans_are_true/ .

Not as good, perhaps, was "Were the Ancient Egyptians black?" at https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/3yegt4/were_the_ancient_egyptians_black/ . jschooltiger points to previous threads, but there are also replies by /u/Gilad1.
