Water Buffalo are native Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent and they've only been introduced to Europe in modern times, except for Italy where they've been for over 1000 years and are the source of Mozzarella cheese — how did they get there in the first place?

I made a grammatical mistake in the title, it should be "Water Buffalo are native to Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent [....]"

My apologies, looking forward to your answers!

They are thought to have been imported by the Longobard King Agilulf in about 600 AD . These are thought to have been a present from the Khan of the Avars, a Turkic nomadic tribe from the area near the Danube river.

Mozzarella is not made from water buffalo milk, only a special kind (mozzarella di bufala) is made from it! Regular mozzarella is made from cow milk
