The American slave trade imported slaves from Africa, a great distance away. However, at the same time, America was busy displacing and exterminating the Native Americans. Why weren't the Natives enslaved instead?

This comes up occasionally, and I'd recommend reading u/anthropology_nerd's answers on Why were Native Americans not enslaved?... and Why weren't Native Americans enslaved by Europeans at the same rate Africans were? Wouldn't it have been cheaper for colonists to enslave the locals rather than import slaves from the other side of the ocean?...and Why weren't there any Native-American slaves?
