We rely on processed baby foods and cereals. What is the history of these products being made available for infant care, and what was it like to keep a baby nutritionally healthy before they were invented?

I just realized that without conveniences like jars of baby foods and powdered dried foods, we'd be individually responsible for making sure babies were able to eat solid foods at some point in their development, despite not being able to chew. My first thought is that mothers would chew the food before feeding, or cook the food until it broke down? Do we wean babies differently/more early now that solid food is more conveniently accessible? I appreciate any related information.

/u/deMohac actually covered the second part of your question in this thread, and /u/silverappleyard also linked to a previous thread where he covered something similar. Hope that helps!
