Just watched Dunkirk and was wondering ...

why didn't the Germans ever attack the mole at beach other than with a few planes one or two timea? Apparently there were 300,000+ soldiers there for over a week. Seems like that would give Germany plenty of time to come up with some sort of assault, especially when they see 100's of boats headed that way to evacuate people.

Hi there -- when the movie came out we had quite a few questions about it, so we collected them into a big Dunkirk Megathread that may be of some interest to you. Feel free to post follow-up questions here, though.

As good a film as Dunkirk is, Nolan's preference for practical effects over CGI meant limitations in the number of aircraft and ships he had available (three Spitfires, a Buchon standing in for a Bf 109, models for the Heinkel and Stukas, one destroyer and a collection of smaller vessels).

The RAF mostly operated in pairs of squadrons over Dunkirk (20+ fighters), and Luftwaffe raids (when visibility permitted) were also frequently made by multiple bomber Geschwader (wings) with fighter escort. On May 29th, for example, the Luftwaffe mounted five major raids including one of 180 Ju 87 Stukas; May 31st saw 195 bomber sorties in three major waves protected by 260 Bf 109s and Bf 110s; June 1st saw the largest number of Luftwaffe sorties, 160 bomber and 325 Stuka. (Numbers from Dunkirk 1940: Operation Dynamo, Douglas C. Dildy). Nolan's film, then, can only give a hint of what the air battles were like with the resources available to him.
