I'm a junior majoring in anthropology, and I'm really interested in pursuing a PhD in Maya archaeology, especially Maya epigraphy. This spring I've started working on a senior thesis about Maya marriage alliances.
So far I have Tulane and UT Austin on my list of places with good Maya offerings. Are there other graduate programs in the US that are particularly good for Maya studies?
I have a few suggestions.
To add to your list, I recommend Stephen Houston who is at Brown University and he specializes in epigraphy. He's done a lot of work with David Stuart, who I am assuming you are pursuing at Austin. You may also want to consider John Justeson at SUNY Albany, but I would email him to see if he is taking on any students. I went to Albany for my undergrad. Albany has a fairly large Mesoamerican program with two archaeologists that work in the Maya region (Marilyn Masson and Robert Rosenswig), Justeson who does epigraphy, and Louise Burkhart who does colonial Aztec stuff. Another suggestion would be Karl Taube at UC Riverside, who has worked with Stuart and Houston on a number of publications. Though Taube is more into iconography than epigraphy.
