In “Dunkirk”, Commander Bolton and other military officers claim that they could see “home from here”; was this true? Is the English Channel that narrow?

The Channel at its narrowest is abut 34 km wide, meaning that you can see from one side of it to the other -- if the fascist mods allow this, here's a Wiki image of the cliffs of Dover seen from France. Dunkirk itself, though, is roughly 45 km east of Calais, which is where that photo is taken from, so troops would have only metaphorically seen home from there.
