What was the (Hellenistic-era?) Egyptian Pike Formation?

by rosalui

I keep seeing information about how the Macedonian phalanx was possibly inspired by a famously effective Egyptian pike formation, but can't find anything on what that actually was or why it was so well-known. Could anyone shed some light on that? :)

Alkibiades415

I've never heard of anything like that, and can find nothing about any Egyptian pikeman in any relation to the macedonian phalanx. The only reference I can find to Egyptian phalanges at all is at the fictitious battle of Thymbrara, where Xenophon pits a stacked "Egyptian" line under Croesus against the two-deep line of Cyrus the Great (Xen. Cyr 6.3.21-3 e.g.) in order to demonstrate the futility of a stacking ranks at such depth (the Egyptian line was 100-deep).

Do you have any sources we can look at regarding the Egyptian pikemen? I suspect the reference is Ptolemaic and much later. The Macedonian phalanx type, by the by, was largely the result of incremental changes to the hoplite status quo in the 4th century, supposedly by the reforms of one Iphikrates (Diod. 15.44). /u/Iphikrates might have some more insight, being the resident expert on such things!
