I know the Austrian Empire ended at the conclusion of WWI, but what happened to the Hapsburg family? Did they flee Europe? Did they ever try to reinstitute their monarchy? Are there any living descendants around today?
The family and its numerous cadet branches continue to exist and live across Europe. Here are just some members:
Karl I son, the last Crown Prince, Otto was a politician, Anti-Nazi, MEP. His funeral was practically a State Funeral in Austria and he is buried in the Imperial Crypt.
His son, also called Karl the current head of the House of Habsbourg-Lorraine
Head of the Austria-Este branch, Lorenz is married to Astrid, Princess of Belgium. Her brother is the present King of the Belgians
The grandson of the famous Franz-Ferdinand is Georg, Duke of Hohenberg. Although not officially a Habsburg, he is a legitimate, direct descendant of them. If his grandparents marriage was not ruled to be morganatic, he would be the Head of the House of Habsburg
Sigismund, titular Grand Duke of Tuscany is the head of the Tuscan branch
The Hungarian Palatine branch is represented by the son of Archduke Joseph
The House are Catholic so there are a lot of them around and listing them all would be exhausting. I have tried to consolidate the main branch and the important cadet branches.
All legitimate males are considered to be in line of succession while all members have the prefix "His/Her Imperial and Royal Highness". The exception to this rule above is the House of Hohenberg. Its members have the prefix "His/Her Highness"
