I’m reading “The First World War” by Keegan, and least in the first 100 pages or so he doesn’t really detail how infantry fought. He just mentions that they advanced, or that they retreated. Can anyone recommend any books that go into detail regarding infantry tactics for the period? Thanks!
Paddy Griffith is probably the authority on this topic. His work, Battle Tactics of the Western Front: The British Army's Art of Attack, 1916-18, is a thorough exploration of British infantry tactics during the latter years of the war.
I would also highly recommend Firepower: The British Army Weapons and Theories of War, 1904-1945 by Shelford Bidwell and Dominick Graham. Firepower is more directed towards the development and utilisation of weapons systems but the discussion of infantry tactics is integral to understanding how advancements in the use of new and exisiting weapons came about.
In addition to what's been said above, a decent English-language coverage of the German side is Gundmundson, Stormtroop Tactics.
