Did Ptolemaic kings dress as Greeks or Egyptians?

by kpagcha

I am currently watching the show Rome and it struck me to see the Ptolemy kid dressed as a pharaoh. I know little about history but I do know that the Ptotelamic dynasty is Greek, after the division of the Empire of Alexander. Looking at pictures of busts of Ptolemaic kings, they all look Greek, not Egyptian/pharaonic. Also, wikipedia lists them as "kings", not "pharaons", which suggests me they did not follow the local customs.

Can someone clear this up for me?

I think /u/cleopatra_philopater is the resident Ptolemaic Egypt expert and they seem to hate Rome's portrayal of Ptolemaic Egypt with burning passion. Not only did they write a monster post on how inaccurate and screwy it's portrayal of Cleopatra and Egypt was (seriously its long and you should read it all but there's also a tldr), but they complain about it all the time cause I've even noticed it. But it's inaccurate as F so there is that.

You should also check out these other posts by them:

The Hellenic Ptolemid rulers of Egypt adopted certain native Egyptian customs and practices, how did the other Hellenistic kingdoms view that choice? Was it considered unusual or bizarre?

Most people see Cleopatra as an Egyptian, but she was actually Greek. What is her real story and how did we come to the legends about her?

There are more like these but I think this selection gives you the gist of what you're interested in.

I hope this helps!
