How big were the biggest slaveholders.

In TV and film you usually see plantations with either 1-2 slaves or a couple of dozen at most. But did anyone ever keep 100s of slaves? I'm referring to slaves in the Western Hemisphere (US, Caribbean, Brazil, etc)

The 1860 US census has a lot to tell us about this particular issue. Of approximately 370,000 slave owners in the American south, 46,000 owned more than 20 slaves and so were listed as "planters," as opposed to farmers who owned a few slaves. About 10,000 of these planters owned more than 50 slaves. 3,000 planters owned 100 or more slaves, and about 300 owned 250 or more. A tiny elite of about 50 planters owned more than 500 slaves.

All numbers taken from Levine's Fall of the House of Dixie.
