Why does the US Constitution have the 17th amendment?

by officerbill_

Why was there a change in how Senators are chosen?

Representatives were intended to be chosen by and represent the people while Senators were chosen by and represented the states. What was going on in the early 1900's that drove the change in the selection and purpose of Senators and why were individual state governments, which had to ratify the amendment, willing to give up that power?

Edit: never mind u/bobblebobble directed me to a previous post that answered my question.

While you wait, there's a good reply to a similar question in [this thread from 4 years ago] (https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/1ij706/prior_to_the_17th_amendments_adoption_in_1913/)
