Hello, My family has had this medal for awhile and recently me and my father have tried to find the story behind it because my family was very private around these matters. The Medal Belonged to my Great Great Uncle who served during WW1 and died during the conflict. I was hoping this medal would give me and my father some answers to him and the life he lived. I have looked around the internet and have found no mention of the bottom inscriptions on any other medals

I know the photos are poor but the bottom inscription reads (185883 GNR. A. ASHTON. R.A.) Any information on what this all means would be greatly appreciated, thank you. *edit: grammar

The number is his service number, the unique identifying number assigned to each soldier. GNR is the abbreviation for Gunner, an enlisted rank in the Royal Artillery. R.A Stands for Royal Artillery, the branch of the service he served in.
