My great-great uncle was a POW in a Japanese camp on Hong Kong for most of WWII. I never knew him and don’t know much about what happened to him.
He did survive. He came home weight about 80 pounds, couldn’t bear to eat rice, and had violent nightmares about snakes that would make him flip his mattress to make sure they weren’t really there.
He was a valued member of the community and was invested in public causes. There’s even a baseball field named after him.
Are there records that would tell me what camp he was in or the things he would have gone through?
All I really know is his name and birthday. I might be able to get a bit more info from my mom.
Hello there! As your question is related to looking for identification/information regarding military personnel, our Guide on Military Identification may be of use to you. It provides a number of different resources, including how to request service records from a number of national agencies around the world, as well as graphical aids to assist in deciphering rank, unit, and other forms of badges or insignia. While the users here may still be able to lend you more assistance, hopefully this will provide a good place to start!
