Please Be Aware: We expect everyone to read the rules and guidelines of this thread. Mods will remove questions which we deem to be too involved for the theme in place here. We will remove answers which don't include a source. These removals will be without notice. Please follow the rules.
Some questions people have just don't require depth. This thread is a recurring feature intended to provide a space for those simple, straight forward questions that are otherwise unsuited for the format of the subreddit.
Here are the ground rules:
Top Level Posts should be questions in their own right.
Questions should be clear and specific in the information that they are asking for.
Questions which ask about broader concepts may be removed at the discretion of the Mod Team and redirected to post as a standalone question.
We realize that in some cases, users may pose questions that they don't realize are more complicated than they think. In these cases, we will suggest reposting as a stand-alone question.
Answers MUST be properly sourced to respectable literature. Unlike regular questions in the sub where sources are only required upon request, the lack of a source will result in removal of the answer.
Academic secondary sources are prefered. Tertiary sources are acceptable if they are of academic rigor (such as a book from the 'Oxford Companion' series, or a reference work from an academic press).
The only rule being relaxed here is with regard to depth, insofar as the anticipated questions are ones which do not require it. All other rules of the subreddit are in force.
Why does Ukraine have the Coast of Moldova?
What happened to Crassus' assets after he died?
To our most excellent flaired team, I'm looking for in-depth sources for the Migration Period, especially the invasion(s) of Italy. Right now I'm reading a 1907 English translation of Historia gentis Langobardorum with Italy and Her Invaders (1880) as a companion book, but I'd like some good scholarly works to go with it, and/or more primary sources.
My Latin is quite rusty and I really don't feel confident reading it directly, so translations are most welcome.
Thanks!
Is there any particular reason that so many Judeo-Christian names like Jonathan (Jon), Benjamin (Ben), etc exist in the long-name, nickname format? It doesn’t seem like this as common in other cultures, so curious about whether this is a recognized trend and/or phenomenon or just some kind of aberration.
In 1789 Spain began allowing foreign vessels to import slaves to Cuba.
I'm working on a digitization project which involves marine insurance circa 1800, and one of the subjects who comes up is Thomas Handsayd Perkins, a known slave trader, who had a merchant house in Havana. In his letter book, on multiple occasions, he directs captain's to pick up slaves on their way to Havanna in order to gain entrance.
Did the importation of a slave (or slaves) ever become a formal requirement for foreign vessels to be allowed to trade in Cuba? I've seen one reference to that being the case, but it lacked any citations and I need something more substantial.
What is the current consensus in modern scholarship about the supposed rebellion of Smerdis/Bardiya against Cambyses/Kamburiya and how Dareios/Dayaravaush had to deal with it later?
Is there a decent history of the reign of Henry III of England? (Pinging /u/Wagrid .) I've seen biographies and histories up to him, and then Edward I onwards, but I have noticed maybe one history that included Henry III's time. Did nothing interesting happen in 1216 – 1272, a reign of 56 years?
Could those who sold themselves into slavery in Archaic Greece have some guarantee of protection or no damage?
Hanging out with friends we found this in a park. It's kinda interesting, the low part seems a Lorraine's Cross, but I haven't found anything about the whole thing. Is this something you Historians can help? I draw it on paint for clearness. Thanks in advance :) https://imgur.com/a/J1LyV
How did the U. S. Congress handle voting for the States in open rebellion during the Civil War? Did they count their representatives' votes as abstentions? Or did they carry on as though those States were no longer part of the Union?
Regine or Regina Olsen?
After searching the web, I’ve found credible sources using both spellings. I really can’t tell if it’s just an interpretation thing between languages, or if one spelling is just a mistake that took off. I’m writing a paper on Kierkegaard and don’t want to use the wrong one.
I would like to learn more about the state of the world during the Middle Ages and the start of the renaissance. Are there any well regarded books, documentaries, or even YouTube series that would help me understand the broad strokes?
What led to the creation of anti-holocaust denial laws in Germany, and why did something even remotely similar not occur in Japan, with regards to their own war crimes? Heck, why hasn’t the UN made it illegal to deny atrocious war crimes of any country yet?
I'm going to re-ask three questions from two weeks ago – hopefully I'll get an answer this time:
1: Was any support given to East German escapees to West Germany and West Berlin, and if so, did this differ between going to the BRD through the Inner-German Border or to the Allied zones of West Berlin through the Berlin Wall?
2: Were East German political prisoners released upon reunification or made to serve out their sentences?
3: Between the fall of the Berlin Wall and the actual reunification of Germany, were there still prosecutions in the DDR for "Republikflucht"?
How much would english shilling (or pound or pence) be worth in silver circa 1500?
Or even better, does anyone have any nice resource to help converting between different currencies in history (in my case 1400-1600)? For now I am trying by finding the silver value of each currency to compare, but am having problems, and it feels like there should be such a thing available
Would it be accurate to say that humans were in the the stone age for approximately 3.4 million years? I need the info for a children's fact sheet, is 'human' the right word to use?
When, approximately, did the population of the USA begin to exceed the population of the British isles?
