North American Native Peoples, First Nations and clean water

by Mitchford

How did American Native peoples in North America specifically (by which I mean North of the Nahua peoples) procure clean water for drinking. I know the Aztecs built aqueducts, built dykes in Lake Texcoco and drank pulque, which is essentially an agave wine to greatly simplify it, which is why I'm asking about those to the North of them. Were they only reliant on springs and natural water sources, did they have ways to purify water such as boiling? Did they use fermentation to produce alcoholic drinks that would be safer to consume? Did the methods differ from culture to culture across pre-columbian Canada and the United State? And if this is not too much did it change after the arrival of Europeans?

There's always room for discussion but perhaps the section Hygiene And Healthy Lifestyles from the FAQ will answer your inquiry. Specifically the second two topics are most relevant.
