"Napoleon accepted the American purchase of Louisiana, in order to gain favour with the Brits"

by AlTarikh

I'm writing summaries of my lecture-notes, and I stumbled across this. I think it's from a lecture, but I'm not quite sure. Perhaps it's from a text book.

My question is how Napoleon would gain favour with the Brits by selling Louisiana to the Americans, when this was after the American Independence.

Edit: Mentioning previous answers is just a convenience -- it is not intended to discourage follow-on questions, information, or debate.

The idea can be refuted pretty well by reflecting that Napoleon was at war (or on the brink of war -- I'm not certain of the dates) with the UK at the time.

Oddly, I can't find many comments here addressing why the Louisiana Purchase -- there are far more on the mechanics of how the money was raised and paid. Edit: the reasons why he sold also explain why he didn't bother to ask for a lot of money.
