Where does the Japanese trend of stern, rough-voiced almost shouting men, like in Samurai and Yakuza movies come from? Does it have its origin in theater?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgsTQxXIXZg - This is sort of an over-the-top example of what I'm referring to. This authoritative male voice shows up a lot in samurai and Yakuza movies but I've heard it as an announcer voice on Japanese TV as well. What's the story here?

I don't know if I could tag along with this question but: I've seen that most thugs/Yakuza will roll their R's HARD in most media. While I was living in Japan I noticed this was pretty non-existent among most everyone else.

Any reason for that?
