Follow up question: did anything like the massacre of mourners descending on Moscow depicted in the movie actually occur?

The only thing I can say for sure is that there was an easing of cruelty in the labour camps - as no one was quite sure if their ruthless behaviour was desired or pardonable now that the big mustache was dead.
