Historical evidence for Hercules and Jesus

by robsc_16

I've often seen the claim that there is as much evidence for Hercules as there is for Jesus. I have found that accounts of Jesus were recorded in the Gospels and the writings of Paul decades after his death. There are also mentions of Jesus by several historians like Josephus, Tacitus, etc. I was not able to find the same evidence for Hercules. Is there any validity to the claim that they have the same amount of evidence that they existed?

I'll leave it up to one of our Greek scholars to answer questions about Hercules, but the general feeling among historians is that it's likely Jesus did exist. (We don't get into the resurrection, etc. -- that's the theology building, over across campus.) You may be interested in this section of our FAQ that talks about the historicity of Jesus and how historians arrive at the consensus that he did exist.
