Why are the answers to the question on r/AskHistorians always so damn long?

by the_prion

It seems like the top answers on every post here are extremely long. It would take me 10+ minutes to read the insanely long essays written. Why do people do this if the answer can be achieved in one short paragraph? They talk about things not relating to the question. And even those which could help.... it’s not worth to waste a good portion of my day reading one reply. And it wasn’t worth a good portion of your day to write it.

One motto of this subreddit is that answers here aren't good because they are right but because they explain. Could many of the questions be answered with a short paragraph that would be technically correct? Maybe. Can many of them be answered with the depth and context that we are looking for in that short amount of space? Definitely not.

If you find the content to be too heavy for you, that simply means this isn't the subreddit for you. You might want to try /r/explainlikeimfive, or /r/AskHistory.

I'm very grateful that this sub had so many talented people willing to share their knowledge of history to those of us who have a great interest in it but maybe not the background or time.
Basically, I love this sub. Don't ever change :)
