On the timeline of all history why was there a new count from year "one" after BC, if there were records of years past why weren't the eldest know recorded times in history reguarded as year one?

Was the coming of Christ that big an event it was decided universally to between historians? If so at what time? I'm quite curious why historical events are read in this way and not based on any other event instead. How it came to be universally reguarded that way as well.
