How historically accurate is “How the West Was Won”?

I doubt there will be any defenders of its accuracy. But one of the more fun stories in it is the colony of thieves on the Mississippi, memorably defeated by Jimmy Stewart and his new New England acquaintances. This was based on the legend of Stack Island, which supposedly did have a colony of thieves, preying on flatboatmen, until a small flotilla of them attacked it and executed the surviving defenders in 1808, sparing only the two women and a child they found. This was published by Emerson Gould, in 1888, in his history of Mississippi life. It may have been somewhat inflated, as to how organized it was. But there seems to have been quite a few robbers; the river did have commercial boat traffic going south and boatmen with money in their pockets returning north, and not much policing.
