How was the American Revolution different to how it’s taught in American schools? What really happened?

I’m a Brit who has been living in Midwest America for 3 years now. I get constantly asked about how I feel about the American Revolution and the blood that was shed in order to to achieve freedom.

With all our British history, I understand why this incident was left out of our school curriculums but has a huge part in US curriculums.

With all my researching, I can not find an accurate depiction of what happened. How many battles were fought? How many people died? Apart from the Boston Masacre (5 perished), Boston tea party and the unnecessary battle of New Orleans years later... i have no idea how it went down.
