What I mean is rather than attempting to depose leftist governments or funding fighting against leftist rebels did any high level United States officials or politicians suggest aiding the leftist groups or leaders in an attempt to shape their relations with the US towards the US with aid or a more "dollar diplomacy" kind of tact? If so what became of their proposals and how did such proposals impact their careers?
Take a look into Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia occupied a very unique position during the Cold War, being one of the few countries of Eastern Europe to liberate itself from Axis control with minimal Soviet aid, and thus, not falling so heavily into the Soviet sphere of influence. In 1948, Josip Broz Tito, Prime Minister of Yugoslavia, openly denounced Stalin in 1948. Multiple attempts were made on Tito's life, and he rather famously sent Stalin a letter reading as follows; " Stop sending people to kill me! We've already captured five of them, one of them with a bomb and another with a rifle... If you don't stop sending killers, I'll send a very fast working one to Moscow and I certainly won't have to send another!"
Harry Truman asked congress for military and economic aid, on the basis of breaking up the communist bloc. While Yugoslavia was never a stalwart Western ally, it was one of the few countries during the cold war that could maintain semi-friendly relations with both east and west.
