Hey everyone. I am currently starting my very first research assistant for a school that I am currently going to and its my first time that I have actually done this type of position before. I am use to researching secondary sources quite well however, primary sources I have a difficult time doing and despite the resources that I have using our local library on campus, it is still very limited and has mostly secondary sources such as JSTOR.
I don't know if you could be much help and I have been keeping in contact with my professor on any questions that I might have for her. Also they are flexible with how much research I do a day for them as well.
This the research goal in a nutshell: Create a collection of primary sources about a series of topics on life in Mussolini's Italy, Stalin's Russia, and Hitler's Germany that can be used in History 319. These documents should provide students insight into what life in these dictatorships was like so that they can imagine the context of their imagined character. A diverse collection will be useful.
These primary sources can be, but are not limited to: Political documents, including laws, decrees and proclamations propaganda autobiographical accounts maps photographs and other images related to this topic for use in the class room.
I will be focusing first on everyday life under Stalin in the Soviet Union.
Here are the following topics that I can research: Economy School Work Daily life Paramilitary Women Children Mothers/fathers Health Crime/police Food Soldiers Revolution Gulag
I also wanted to mention that I will not be able to access the local library on campus because I am at home. I could certainly access something at the local library in town, but I don't know if my old library card from when I was younger is still allowed.
I am hoping if someone could help me find some good online primary source documents on researching the daily life under Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini.
Thank you if you are able to help with these sources. I should make it clear that I am not asking for help on the research itself, its more about helping me find a good online primary source on these topics.
I would recommend obtaining a copy of Sheila Fitzpatrick's Everyday Stalinism which should have direct primary sources cited and would be a great start.
