Sean's Bar in Ireland was recognized as the oldest still operating pub in Europe dating back to 900 A.D. What kind of records would a business like this have kept during that time?

What is the original 900 AD name?

Not an answer but a follow up question in two parts. I like the question since I use increasingly complex record keeping as an example of how society evolves in one of my lectures on a different topic.

  1. Are there any major milestones in business record keeping from 900 A.D. up to modern time and what brought them?

  2. My guess would be that the driving force from authorities for record keeping is to be able to know how much to tax people and businesses. Is that so and/or are there other driving forces behind business record keeping that have grown over time?
