Seating Dynamics in a King's (or Emperor's) Court

by OutrageousPermit

I feel like there was an important power dynamic in the way important officials were seated. If someone sat to the right of a king, they were the more important guest. The less important guests sat farther and farther away. When I tried to investigate the fact, all that came up was a bunch of Bible websites. Is there any secular article describing this seating dynamic and the history of it? Or am I making this up?

It would be helpful if you could define which court or culture you're interested in, so an expert can share their expertise. For example, Mughal India, Qayyar Persia, 19th century Mexico?
