Why is the Vietnam War so controversial in the aspect of pride for Americans?

A lot of people consider it the war we didn't win. It's arguable that there are other wars in that category.

Others feel it was an unjust war. The political climate at the time was a fear of the spread of communism. In Vietnam we backed a tyrannical corrupt regime to fight the communist backed rebels.
