I'm interested in learning more about society in medieval Scandinavia; what are some well-regarded introductions on the subject for a beginner?

I am a hobbyist game developer and am about to start working on a project in this setting. Specifically I would like to know more about village and town life but obviously anything and everything you can show me will be of tremendous help.

edit: to be clear when I say medieval Scandinavia I mean 8th/9th century, pre/early Viking period

Are you interested in the actual Viking era, or in the later period after the arrival of Christianity (but which is probably more reflected in some ways by the saga literature codified at that time)?
