Neville Chamberlain has been compared unfavorably to Winston Churchill (to put it mildly) but I’d heard that Adolf Hitler, amidst his final defeat, gave more credit for his defeat to Chamberlain, than to Churchill. True?

I’d heard this long ago and couldn’t find anything via Google, etc. Chamberlain has a reputation only slightly better than Quisling, and I know he’s been defamed for “giving away” Czechoslovakia and being a poor patsy to Hitler’s aggression but I know also he was also leader in building up the Royal Air Force during the borrowed time of letting Hitler strike East (while Churchill before him cut to the bone military expenditures in order to cut taxes) . Did Hitler actually give credit to Chamberlain for tricking Hitler into letting Britain have more time to rearm in face of an already dominant Germany? Or is it some figment of the imagination?

Others will be able to report on Hitler's stated views of Chamberlain, if any, but one possible source for this idea is actually the infamous "Hitler Diaries", one of the most notorious forgeries of the last century.

As is now well known, the forger of the diaries, Konrad Kujau, stuck very closely to Hitler's known movements and opinions in order not to be caught out by attempts to check his materials against other sources. One of the few occasions on which he offered an invention of his own was in his account of the Munich conference of 1938 – an extract that, because it was so startlingly original, was selected by the newsmagazine Stern as part of the extravagant coverage of the diaries that it planned when they were published in 1983:

He almost outwitted me. This smoothie Englishman... I would have imposed quite different conditions on Mussolini and Daladier [the French Prime Minister], but I couldn't do so with this cunning fox, Chamberlain.

Wow, seems like that’s about when I’d heard it... close, most likely untrue. Hope more info comes in??
