Hi reddit, I'm new at history, so i wanted to start some late modern history books (sorry my english is so bad hahaha), I added to my list Postwar by Tony Judt which really caught my attention, I also heard of "History of the XX century" by Eric Hobsbawm. The problem is that this is going to be my first book of this kind (although I know pretty much of history for someone who didn't read anything) so i was worried if some of these books would be hard to read.
It would be so cool if any of you can recommend me good history books to start with, no problem if they are a little hard to read, I just dont wanna those books that you read 5 pages and have to take a break hahaha
(Sorry for my english again lol)
It is easy to understand your writing.
Looking at your examples: you want to look at large areas and decades of time, right? Not merely Europe, or USA versus Soviet Union, or one war?
You could look at the AskHistorians book list at https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/wiki/books . There is a modern history section near 1/3 of the distance from the top. There are modern books at the bottom also -- they are tighter in time, like World War I, World War II, and like that.
Tony Judt, Postwar, is in the tight page for Cold War ( https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/wiki/books/coldwar ). It got a great review.
The other book: I think you probably mean Eric Hobsbawm, The Age of Extremes: A History of the World, 1914-1991. It's not in the book list, but I have seen very good reviews.
The problem: not many reviews talk about easiness or hardness of reading. You may have to do it again: name other books and ask for opinions, of quality and reading difficulty. I have not read these books, so I cannot help. Thank you for pointing to them! I have put them on my list of books to get from the library.
